My Nerdy Life is a personal blog run by one person on a Raspberry Pi. There are no accounts, no comments, no newsletter, and no ads. Here’s everything that happens to your data when you visit.

Analytics

The site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which posts get read. It records things like the pages you view, how you got here, your approximate location (country or city level), and your device and browser type. Google sets its own cookies to do this. That data is handled under Google’s privacy policy, and you can opt out with Google’s browser add-on or any content blocker. The site works exactly the same with analytics blocked.

A/B tests

Some pages occasionally test two versions of a bit of text, using a self-hosted copy of GrowthBook. To keep you on the same version between visits, your browser stores a random ID (gb_uid) in local storage. It isn’t linked to your name, email, or anything else about you, and it never leaves this site except as an anonymous “which version did they see” event in Analytics.

Things your browser remembers

If you switch between light and dark mode, that choice is saved in your browser’s local storage (theme). It stays on your device.

Server logs

Like nearly every web server, this one logs each request: IP address, time, page requested, and browser user-agent. The logs are used to keep the site running and to block abusive traffic, and they’re deleted after 14 days. Traffic reaches the Pi through Cloudflare, which processes requests under Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Google Search Console tools

I run a private dashboard that reads Google Search Console data for websites I have access to, using read-only permission granted by my own Google account. That data is used only to show search performance on a dashboard only I can reach. It’s stored on my own hardware and isn’t shared, sold, or used for anything else. The access can be revoked at any time from the Google account’s permissions page.

What I don’t do

I don’t sell, rent, or share personal data, don’t run ads, and don’t build profiles of visitors. There’s nothing to sign up for, so I don’t hold any personal information about you beyond what’s described above.
