I used to think design was a talent you were born with. Turns out it's mostly a set of rules you can learn — and then break on purpose.
For years I told myself I “wasn’t a design person.” I could build anything, but it always looked a bit off. The fix wasn’t talent — it was rules.
Three rules that fixed 80% of it
- Pick a spacing scale and never freehand a gap again. 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32.
- Two fonts, max. One for display, one for body.
- Contrast is a feature, not an accident. Make the important thing loud and everything else quiet.
Then break them
Once the rules are muscle memory, breaking one on purpose reads as style instead of mistake. That’s the whole trick.
