My First Functional Print That Actually Survived

Decorative prints are easy. A part that has to bear load, clip into place, and get handled daily is a different game. Here's what finally worked.
Anyone can print a little dragon. Printing a bracket that holds real weight and doesn’t snap the first week — that took a few tries.
What kept failing
- Layer adhesion along the load axis. Reorienting the part so the stress ran across layers instead of between them fixed most breaks.
- Too-tight clips. My press-fit tabs were modelled at exact size. Real FDM needs clearance.
The tolerance that worked
For a snug-but-removable fit on my printer, 0.2 mm of clearance per side was the sweet spot. Your printer will differ — print a tolerance test comb once and you’ll never guess again.
The winning part has been in daily use for a month. Small victory, big grin.
